| A SUPER SEASON RETURNS YOUR SUMMER MOVIE GUIDE By Richard Livsey NEW YORK CITY - After an awesome weekend at the beach, one filled with sunshine, babes and waves. I was reluctant to get back to work. Tuesday after a holiday is tougher than any Monday of the year. The problem was I didn’t want the party to stop. But then I thought about the subject matter for this week's column and all that changed. It was easy to write because I’m really excited about some of the movies coming out. This season's line up looks tastier than a jumbo vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles. It all starts this Friday with The Break Up starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston. Now I know what you’re thinking, but give Aniston the benefit of the doubt. She’s not trying to act out her last months with Brad Pitt on the screen. This is a romantic comedy, that hopefully will transform a familiar plot into something fresh and entertaining. Also set to release this weekend is the most important film you will see all summer or this entire year for that matter. Al Gore’s global warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. The film is directed by Davis Guggenheim and it already has the critics not only raving, but also sharing their concern for the planet. After seeing An Inconvenient Truth you’ll need something to cheer you up. And Click starring Adam Sandler, Kate Beckingsale and Christopher Walking is my pick for the comedy of the summer. Sandler’s character is given a universal remote that allows him to control his universe. The previews for this movie are hysterical, so if you feeling down or on a date this is the movie to see. But the surefire blockbuster in the month of June, is without a doubt Superman Returns. Brandon Routh has been given the nod to play Superman, Kevin Spacey is perfectly cast as Lex Luthor, and super hottie Kate Bosworth is going to be starring as Lois Lane. In July, we have my favorite actor and close friend (yeah I wish), Johnny Depp starring in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Now I have to admit that when the first movie in this series came out, I didn't think to highly of it when I saw the previews. I wondered why Depp was wasting his time with such a role, but after watching the movie, I was pulled right in just as everyone else. It's just good swashbuckling fun. Also in July writer/director Kevin Smith brings us back to his roots with the release of Clerks II. Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) and Dante Hicks (Brian O’ Halloran) are at it again and this time their adventures are going to transport them into the greasy world of fast food. But the Mac Daddy of July is going to be the remake of the 80's TV series, Miami Vice staring Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx and Gong Li. Download Phil Collins hit In The Air Tonight into your iPods and get ready to rumble. The season seems to taper off in August, but Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center starring Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena is going to make some noise. Now I’m not sure how I feel about this movie. Don’t get me wrong, I love Oliver Stone’s work, but since I was living in New York on that tragic day, I don’t know if I’m ready to live through that nightmare again. That’s the same reason why I haven’t seen United 93 either. HOME BACK TO STORY ARCHIVES ABOUT DONATE TO THIS SITE |
